Supporting Holodomor Education

Holodomor Tour Bus

Curriculum and Historical Understanding

Understanding history is essential to protecting democracy, human rights, and future generations. Nadia Guerrera supports meaningful education about the Holodomor—the man-made famine that claimed millions of Ukrainian lives in 1932–33—as part of a broader commitment to teaching students about historical injustice, genocide, and the importance of democratic values.

Ontario has recently expanded mandatory learning about the Holodomor within the Grade 10 Canadian History curriculum, helping students better understand one of the twentieth century’s most devastating tragedies and its lasting impact on Ukrainian Canadians.

The new curriculum will ensure all students learn about the adverse consequences of extreme political ideologies like those from Stalin’s totalitarian communist regime, designed to ensure students learn from history.

Why This Matters

  • Preserving historical truth
  • Combating hatred and misinformation
  • Supporting democracy and human rights
  • Recognizing the experiences of Ukrainian Canadians
  • Helping students understand the consequences of authoritarian regimes
